In August of 2008, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire (our summer home). My wife and I found ourselves on a Friday in late August – stunned with this diagnosis, feeling a sense of urgency and wondering what to do next. We are members of Healthnetwork Foundation as a result of our association with the Boca Grande Health Clinic. We called Healthnetwork to inquire about getting a second opinion.

I saw Healthnetwork’s system in action and I just can’t say enough good things about it.
While I was visiting my family in San Francisco, I received a call from my local internist, Dr. Michael Steffan at the Boca Grande Health Clinic. I was surprised to learn my recent blood test indicated there was an urgent need for me to see a rheumatologist. How was I, someone who has no ties to healthcare facilities in San Francisco, supposed to locate a reputable rheumatologist who could see me immediately?

This experience has really proven how Healthnetwork connections quickly become so important in your life. I was lost without them.
I was up to my elbows cleaning shrimp when I received a call from my physician about two skin biopsies he had taken recently. One of the biopsies came back as a basal cell carcinoma and the other was melanoma. My mind was reeling. I didn't know what to do.

For a few years now I have gone to several doctors – a pulmonologist for my asthma, a gastroenterologist for stomach issues and a primary care physician for other health issues. I kept going from one to the other and my frustration lingered as I continued to have issues.
My husband remembered that we had access to Healthnetwork and I called them to see what they could do. I asked Whitney, the Healthnetwork Medical Coordinator, about getting into Mayo Clinic for my coughing issues. I would have been content to tackle that single issue when she asked if there was anything else she could do. How thoughtful of her. She made it so convenient to get appointments for several of my issues at the Mayo Clinic. Soon I was hearing from the liaison at Mayo Clinic and we were putting together an itinerary.
