New Program for Parents and Loved Ones |
With the holidays around the corner and family getting together more often you may notice a loved one who is facing some aging issues. You want to help but you may not know how. This could be time to ask yourself the following questions about a loved one…
- Do they have multiple medical issues / are they seeing different specialists? - Are they taking multiple medications or supplements? - Are they experiencing a change in health? (behavioral issues, memory problems, unexplained weight loss, etc.) - Are they experiencing weakness or problems with gait or balance issues?
If your answers raise concerns about a loved one’s health, take comfort in knowing that Healthnetwork has several centers of excellence to address these medical issues. One program in particular, the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Program (CGAP) with noted geriatric specialist, Robert M. Palmer, M.D., at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, is an ideal evaluation for those who are experiencing age-associated issues. Dr. Palmer is renowned for his patient-centric geriatric care. Now at UPMC in Pittsburgh, he has the backing of one of the highest NIH-funded geriatric programs in the country.
This geriatric program at UPMC shows great promise of enhancing the quality of life and the dignity of your aging loved ones. Members who are looking for a comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment of an elderly loved one’s physical, cognitive and functional well-being should call Healthnetwork now to schedule an appointment. Diabetes Empowerment - Online Enlightenment |
The latest statistics released by the American Diabetes Association, indicate that there are over 23 million individuals with diabetes and 57 million with pre-diabetes, in the U.S. Yet it has been estimated that only 4,000 trained diabetes physicians provide specialized care. Knowing that information is so vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for diabetics and their caregivers, the researchers at UCSF have created complete online diabetes self-management education program, www.deo.ucsf.edu, which has been launched by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Diabetes Teaching Center. For the newly diagnosed, this website can help individuals understand diabetes, and facilitate the necessary lifestyle changes to manage their care. For those already living with diabetes, this program provides training in the latest advances in self-care and problem-solving skills. [Read more]

Heart burn is hard to ignore. Some individuals are discovering that their acid reflux is damaging their esophagus, causing a condition known as “Barrett’s Esophagus.” Patients diagnosed with this condition are 15 times more likely to develop esophageal cancer. Douglas Peskow, M.D. from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Healthnetwork alliance, claims that "The rate of esophageal cancer is six times what it was in the 1970s, though we don’t know why. White males with longstanding heartburn are at greatest risk." Early diagnosis and treatment are the best defense. Learn what medical advances this Boston-based hospital is bringing to its patients. Even if you don't have first aid training, there are simple things you can do in an emergency. What do you do if someone is stung by a bee and has an allergic reaction? Impales themself on a nail? The doctor's advice: Leave it in and call 911 (unless it's something small, like a splinter) "It may be plugging a hole in an artery or vein, and as soon as you take it out, you could bleed to death," says Dr. David Beiser, an emergency medicine physician at the University of Chicago Medical Center, a Healthnetwork alliance hospital.
